Bay: An area of water mostly surrounded or otherwise demarcated by land. Bays generally have calmer waters than the surrounding sea, due to the surrounding land blocking some waves and often reducing winds. It can also be an inlet in a lake or pond.

Take a cruise to Mexico or take a night's outing on a casino boat. The Gulf of Mexico offers many vacation opportunities.
Gulf: A large bay that is an arm of an ocean or sea.

River: A natural watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing toward an ocean, a lake, a sea or another river.
